Holly Gibbs Elected to American Academy of Arts & Sciences

Five UW–Madison faculty members received one of the nation’s highest honors.

Holly GibbsHolly Gibbs, the Gaylord A. Nelson Distinguished Chair in Integrated Environmental Studies and professor in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, was one of five University of Wisconsin–Madison faculty members elected to the newest cohort of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Also among the UW inductees is Dominique Brossard, a Nelson Institute affiliate.

Chartered in 1780, the honorary society and research center was established to recognize and engage the nation’s most accomplished minds. Academy members span academia, the arts, policy, and industry. In addition to the UW faculty recognized, this year’s inductees include a roster of 252 leaders including actor Rita Moreno and author Colson Whitehead, joining the ranks of visionaries like Albert Einstein, Maria Mitchell, and Anna Deavere Smith.

Gibbs joined the UW–Madison faculty in 2008 after earning her PhD in the Nelson Institute’s environment and resources programs. In addition to teaching in the Nelson Institute, Gibbs is affiliated with the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment and directs the Global Land Use and Environment Lab, which has become a leading expert in human-environment interactions, environmental conservation, and sustainable food production.
