Course Description

Earth is the only known home of life in the universe, and it boasts a spectacular variety of it. Humans are a particularly successful component of this variety, modifying the global environment and making the planet increasingly inhospitable for many organisms, including in some ways for us. Our collective actions now drive changes to Earth’s ecosystem that will determine its ability to sustain life of all kinds into the future. Despite the warranted doom and gloom, there is reason for optimism.

In this course, we will explore life on Earth and the diverse approaches to sustaining it, integrating perspectives from science, economics, and policy. Course content includes lectures and discussions as well as readings from lay audience books, scientific literature, and current environmental news.
