Under the direction of the Lands & Habitat conservation Public Lands Specialist and supervision of the section supervisor and with support from the Wildlife Management Education Team, direct, administer, and serve as an adjunct property resource for Wildlife Management properties’ interpretative, outreach, and education programs, including diverse recreational opportunities, wildlife viewing and nature tourism.

Make recommendations for programs that volunteers, other staff (i.e., property managers, other educators) and community groups can host. Provide technical assistance and/or programs to organizations and businesses (public and private), and the general public on the recreational and wildlife viewing opportunities on the property and/or natural and human history of the property, resource management, and environmental protection issues.

Design, develop and maintain self-guided nature exhibits and features for properties and other promotional materials in concert with the communications specialist. Conduct field studies of the property to determine what is of significance and alert property managers and the public to significant discoveries. Evaluate and report out on programming success.

  • 40% – In concert with the property managers of Wildlife Areas across the state, build relationships with organizations and businesses in nearby communities to provide educational programming and promote recreational opportunities on these lands. Initial work with focus on 20 pilot/focal properties.
  • 40% – Lead, host or co-host, facilitate recreational and/or educational programs and events on properties, not limited to natural & human history, hiking, biking, wildlife observation, paddling (kayak/canoe), and other compatible activities on Wildlife Areas.
  • 10% – Develop promotional, outreach and educational materials related to Wildlife Areas and State Habitat Areas to encourage property-specific recreation on these lands.
  • 10% – Evaluate programming and success; adapt new strategies with feedback from programming participants. Report out on evaluation.

Special Requirements:

  • Residency: To be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.
    • A Wisconsin resident is a person who:
      • Has established a residence, as defined in s. 6.10(1), in this state not less than 10 days earlier;
      • Has resided in this state for not less than a total of one year out of the immediately preceding 5 years;
      • Is eligible to register to vote in this state; or
      • Is the spouse of a person meeting the requirements of par. (a), (b), or (c).” s.230.03(12), Wis. Stats.

Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications below, the selected candidate must be eligible to drive a state vehicle and meet the following criteria:

  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a minimum of two years licensed driving experience
  • Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years
  • Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year

Required Qualifications

  • Experience coordinating and tracking volunteer groups, partners, events and trainings.
  • Experience communicating with a wide range of staff and the general public as well as presenting in large group meetings virtually and in person.
  • Experience creating promotional materials like maps, brochures, posters and presentations.Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote, Teams)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience creating promotional products with Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Experience creating, distributing, and evaluating program success and effectiveness.
  • Experience leading and/or facilitating natural resources and/or recreational programming.
