Summer Environmental Education Internship

Employment Period

32 hours minimum per week. Start date flexible; week of May 12 preferred. Participation is required in summer camps May 22-23; June 23-27; July 21-25; August 4-8. The ending date is August 13.

Position Description

Work with Wehr’s education staff to create and implement nature day camp programming, assist in leading field trips and in-school programs for preschool to school-age children, and work with visitors at special events. This position is an excellent opportunity for students to explore the vocation of environmental education in a supportive work climate with award-winning professionals.

Primary Responsibilities

• Assist with the development and delivery of nature-focused day camps for children
• Work with naturalist staff to provide developmentally appropriate, inquiry-based programs for groups of preschool and school-aged children at Wehr, other Milwaukee County parks, and on-site in schools, libraries, and daycare centers
• Help with the maintenance of Wehr’s education animals
• Assist with evening natural history programs for adults and families
• Help maintain educational equipment
• Participate in natural areas management activities such as invasive species control and planting of native plants

Qualifications

•  An interest in exploring career opportunities in environmental education, interpretation, and natural resources conservation
• A current driver’s license and access to a dependable vehicle
• Must be enrolled in a college or technical program and have completed at least one year of study focusing on natural sciences, conservation, education, or related fields.
• Prior experience working with children, particularly preschool ages, is preferred
• The ability to work outdoors in all types of weather
• Ability to lift 35 lbs.
• Knowledge of Wisconsin natural history
• American Red Cross First Aid certification is preferred
