In the Environmental Affairs Specialist role, you will be responsible for evaluating the environmental impacts from our activities and oversee regulatory compliance by the University of Wisconsin-Madison with the associated environmental obligations – thereby mitigating the effects to our natural resources.
This is a challenging compliance position which includes: environmental permitting and permit administration and oversight; external stakeholder outreach; advising and directing our internal stakeholders; compiling required documentation; and demonstrating compliance to our environmental agencies and stakeholders. The Environmental Affairs Specialist position also offers the chance to work within a community of subject matter experts with resources unique to a world class research and educational institution. The rich variety of activities and people at UW-Madison results in a dynamic environment with unique challenges.
Common duties include preparing documentation needed to satisfy regulatory requirements and the identification of environmental risks at UW-Madison facilities. The Environmental Affairs Specialist will assess, review, and resolve technical environmental issues, and therefore a comprehensive knowledge of environmental regulation and science is needed. The position will also actively develop and facilitate University policymaking. Lastly, the position will be required to represent the University before regulatory agencies and consulting engineers. Excellent organizational, writing, and other communication skills are critical to this position.
About the Division of FP&M and Department of EH&S
The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW-Madison campus in support of the university’s education, research, and outreach activities. FP&M works behind the scenes to coordinate campus planning, manage design and construction, maintain and operate buildings and grounds, supply utility services, ensure health and safety, and provide parking and transportation services. The Department of Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) provides guidance, technical consultations, and expertise to the campus community in the areas of biological, chemical, environmental, engineering, radiation, and fire safety.
