About Us

The Soutpansberg Mountains host a diverse assemblage of small mammals, many of which play critical roles in seed dispersal, pollination, and ecosystem functioning. The Lajuma Research Centre maintains long-term monitoring programmes to better understand species distribution, habitat use, and population trends across the reserve and its multiple and diverse habitats.

Internship Overview

Interns assist with live-trapping surveys, species identification, and habitat assessments. This internship provides hands-on experience in ecological sampling techniques and contributes to broader biodiversity and conservation research.

Key Activities

  • Recording species, sex, age class, and morphometric data
  • Documenting habitat characteristics and environmental conditions
  • Assisting with data entry and management

Fieldwork Requirements

All fieldwork is carried out on foot, often over uneven terrain and in variable weather. Students should be comfortable living remotely, hiking, and have a basic level of fitness.

Eligibility

Open to students, recent graduates, or individuals with experience in handling small mammals.

Duration

A minimum stay of 8 weeks is recommended.

Conservation Fee

A conservation fee is required, which directly supports conservation and research efforts and includes:

  • Shared accommodation
  • Pick-up and drop-off from/to Louis Trichardt
  • Fortnightly town trips for supplies
