The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR) is seeking an Assistant Area Wildlife Manager in Karlstad. Karlstad is a small community in the far northwest part of Minnesota, with less than 1,000 residents. The local community is primarily a farming community, however there are nearby industries such as Mattracks, Polaris, Artic Cat, Marvin Windows, Central Boiler, and Digi-Key.

The Karlstad Work area covers 1,900 square miles located in Kittson, southwestern Roseau, and northwestern Marshall Counties. There are almost 100,000 acres of Wildlife Management Areas and School Trust Land that are managed out of this office. Most of these lands are located within the Tallgrass Aspen Parklands, with a smaller portion in the Red River Prairie.

This Karlstad Assistant Area Wildlife Manager will be responsible for assisting with the management of Minnesota’s elk herds, which are located in Kittson, Marshall, and Roseau Counties. Minnesota has a small but very management intensive elk population. Some of the elk management duties include: winter aerial elk surveys; forage plot management; habitat management projects; coordinating annual Kittson County elk hunts; responding to nuisance elk complaints; communicating with media, public, and nonprofit/non-government organizations.
