During the week of April 8, 2019, the University of Wisconsin–Madison hosted certified Peacemaker Leland Wigg Ninham as the second Elder-in-Residence. A Tribal Judge for the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin for 14 years and a faculty member for the National Judicial College in Nevada, Ninham utilizes his experience as a Peacemaker to help others learn to interact and manage conflict in respectful ways.
Part of a larger initiative to improve the experience of American Indian and Alaskan Native students attending UW–Madison while strengthening partnerships between tribal nations and the university, Ninham spent a week educating students and providing cultural exchanges. The Culture Keepers/ Elders-in-Residence Program is led by the Native Nations_UW Working Group in partnership with the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, the American Indian Studies Program, University Housing, the Division of Student Life, the Multicultural Student Center and the School of Human Ecology.
