The Nelson Institute's Adrian Treves and Vincent Smith were among 29 faculty members and graduate students inducted into UW-Madison's Teaching Academy in a ceremony April 29 at the Health Sciences Learning Center. Treves an animal behaviorist and ecologist, is an assistant professor of environmental studies. Smith is a doctoral student in environment and resources. Treves joins a dozen other current and emeritus Nelson Institute faculty members as Teaching Academy Fellows. Fellows are UW-Madison faculty or instructional staff members concerned about teaching and devoted to enriching the learning environment at the university. Smith is the second Nelson Institute graduate student to become a Future Faculty Partner. Anyone with a continuing academic connection to UW-Madison who is engaged in graduate or professional study for a career in higher education teaching or outreach (such as graduate students, teaching assistants, medical and veterinary residents, post-doctoral fellows, etc.) is eligible to be nominated as a future faculty partner. Established in 1993, the Teaching Academy promotes effective teaching and learning at UW-Madison and nationally by encouraging innovation, experimentation, and dialogue among faculty, instructional staff, and teachers of the future. Its membership now includes more than 190 fellows and 60 future faculty partners.
