Few places are as synonymous with UW\u2013Madison as the Lakeshore Nature Preserve. Whether it’s watching the sunset from Picnic Point, studying beneath the trees between classes, or gathering around a fire circle with friends, generations of students, alumni, and visitors have made memories along the shores of Lake Mendota. Woven into daily campus life, the preserve is more than a scenic backdrop \u2014 it’s a place for teaching, research, recreation, and reflection that helps define the Wisconsin experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s educational, it’s recreational, and it’s a place for respite and wellbeing,\u201d said Bryn Scriver, volunteer and outreach coordinator for the Lakeshore Nature Preserve. \u201cI can’t imagine UW\u2013Madison without the Lakeshore Nature Preserve.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very unique,\u201d said Brad Herrick, director of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve. \u201cEspecially because it\u2019s nearly a third of the size of campus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even for those who have wandered its trails, there’s much more to discover. Beyond Picnic Point lies 300 acres of restored prairies, woodlands, and wetlands, with a history stretching back 12,000 years. From serving as one of the university’s largest outdoor classrooms to supporting hundreds of volunteers each year, here are five things you may not know about UW\u2013Madison’s iconic Lakeshore Nature Preserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\"Nature\n\n\n\n

1. <\/span>The preserve is much more than just Picnic Point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

S’more, please! Nearly 1,600 fire circle reservations were made at Picnic Point in 2025. Reservations<\/a> aren’t required, but with campfires this popular, they certainly come in handy.<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

For many at UW\u2013Madison, the Lakeshore Nature Preserve begins and ends with Picnic Point. The peninsula’s sweeping lake views have made it one of the university’s most beloved destinations, but the preserve extends far beyond its iconic trail. Stretching 300 acres from Eagle Heights apartments to the limnology building, it includes woodlands, restored prairies, marshes, and more than four miles of Lake Mendota shoreline \u2014 the longest publicly owned stretch of shoreline on the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWillow Creek Woods is on one end, and Wally Bauman Woods is on the other end,\u201d Herrick said. \u201cAnd there’s great trails that connect all of those. So, there\u2019s a lot to explore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\"Nature\n\n\n\n

2. <\/span>People have lived there for 12,000 years<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Lakeshore Nature Preserve’s story begins long before the University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison \u2014 or even the state of Wisconsin \u2014 existed. People have lived along the shores of Lake Mendota for roughly 12,000 years, leaving behind a rich cultural history that includes more than 40 documented archaeological sites. Today, the preserve also protects Indigenous effigy and burial mounds, serving as an important reminder that this landscape has been home to generations of people for thousands of years. \u201cWe know how important it is to steward and protect those resources,” said Scriver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. <\/span>It almost became lakeside neighborhoods instead of a nature preserve<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the 1830s, surveyors documented the landscape that would eventually become the Lakeshore Nature Preserve as a mosaic of prairie, wetlands, and oak savanna. Over the following decades, much of the land was farmed, grazed, and developed with homes before parcels were gradually acquired by UW\u2013Madison. The final addition, Frautschi Point, wasn’t donated to the university until the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The preserve nearly had a very different future. Historic maps show plans to subdivide Picnic Point into lakeside home lots, while what is now Biocore Prairie was once envisioned as the site of a large estate complete with a horse arena. Those developments never came to fruition, leaving behind the 300-acre natural area that thousands of students, researchers, and visitors enjoy today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’re so lucky to have these lands as a public resource,\u201d Scriver said. \u201cIf they hadn’t been acquired by the university, it would be more like Shorewood Hills \u2014 big homes on the lake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. <\/span>It\u2019s really an outdoor classroom \u2014 not just a park<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The best classrooms don\u2019t always have walls \u2014 but this one soon will. The future Frautschi Center<\/a> will expand the Lakeshore Nature Preserve\u2019s role as a place for discovery, giving Badgers a new space to learn about the landscape just beyond its doors.<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Out there, class bells are bird chirps and toad croaks. While many visitors come to the Lakeshore Nature Preserve to hike, birdwatch, or unwind, its primary purpose is advancing UW\u2013Madison’s teaching, research, and outreach mission. In 2025 alone, the preserve supported 60 teaching and research permits across 25 courses representing 16 academic departments, with additional projects led by external organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Lakeshore Nature Preserve is, first and foremost, an outdoor classroom \u2014 or a living learning laboratory,” Herrick said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\"Nature\n\n\n\n

5. <\/span>It Takes Hundreds of Volunteers to Keep the Preserve Thriving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Volunteers help care for the land through hands-on work parties<\/a>, while the annual Bioblitz<\/a> invites everyone to become a citizen scientist for a day \u2014 searching for plants, animals, and everything in between.<\/figcaption>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

More than 180,000 people passed through the entrance to Picnic Point last year alone. Yet despite welcoming thousands of visitors each week, the Lakeshore Nature Preserve continues to feel like an escape into nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hopefully it doesn’t look like that many people are using the Lakeshore Nature Preserve,” Scriver said with a laugh. Keeping it that way takes year-round work. More than 700 volunteers contribute thousands of hours each year alongside university staff and student interns, helping stock firewood, maintain trails, remove invasive species, and restore native habitats so the preserve can continue serving students, researchers, and visitors for generations to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
