But they didn\u2019t always take their fire-breathing, gold-hoarding form that\u2019s familiar today. Learn how the fiery creatures of lore are intertwined in our environment \u2014 and meet some of the real dragons that walk the earth today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"244\" height=\"412\" class=\"gb-media-3b57098d\" alt=\"\" title=\"dragon-number-1\" src=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/dragon-number-1.webp\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-text gb-text-e2a3f88b\"><span class=\"commons-sr-only\">1. <\/span>Global Influence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDragons, or snake-like creatures resembling dragons, appear in almost all cultures around the world,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/medievalstudies.wisc.edu\/staff\/stoll-daniel\/\">Daniel Stoll<\/a>, a UW\u2013Madison literary studies PhD student and graduate associate of the Nelson Institute\u2019s Center for Culture, History, and Environment. Though their forms vary slightly \u2014 from ancient Mesopotamia\u2019s snakelike creatures with venomous bites to bearers of luck and fortune across Chinese history to villainous hoarders of Western literature \u2014 dragons transcend time and place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"271\" height=\"423\" class=\"gb-media-1e0907a6\" alt=\"\" title=\"dragon-number-2\" src=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/dragon-number-2.webp\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-text gb-text-442aea55\"><span class=\"commons-sr-only\">2. <\/span>Real-World Roots<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Dan Katcher modeled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5Cww-5NEN4I&amp;t=1s\"><em>Game of Thrones<\/em>\u2019 dragons<\/a>, or when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LmZYpAk7ctc\">Peter, Paul, and Mary<\/a> sang about the friendly Puff, they had plenty of reference material. Photo courtesy of the National Museum of Scotland<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"273\" height=\"434\" class=\"gb-media-ce8e9258\" alt=\"\" title=\"dragon-number-3\" src=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/dragon-number-3.webp\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-text gb-text-ed68bdc2\"><span class=\"commons-sr-only\">3. <\/span>A Fiery Debut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first fire-breathing dragon appeared in English literature in the 8th-century epic poem<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Beowulf\"> <em>Beowulf<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em> \u201c<em>Beowulf<\/em> survived hundreds of years in a single medieval manuscript, and it was almost lost in a fire in 1731,\u201d Stoll says. \u201cThe manuscript suffered some fire damage, and in several places the fire damage in the manuscript is right around where the dragon appears.\u201d Coincidence?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"325\" height=\"411\" class=\"gb-media-230f6728\" alt=\"\" title=\"dragon-number-4\" src=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/dragon-number-4.webp\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-text gb-text-302a3548\"><span class=\"commons-sr-only\">4. <\/span>Inspiring More than Literature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many modern works, including <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em> and <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>, use dragons to symbolize destruction, greed, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/environment\/2019\/05\/game-of-thrones-dragons-environment-disaster\/\">ecological change<\/a>. It\u2019s appropriate, then, that the discovery of one of the world\u2019s most harmful chemicals can be linked to dragons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is an ancient symbol from Egyptian iconography called the \u2018ouroborus,\u2019 which depicts a dragon\/snake eating its own tail: a symbol for rebirth,\u201d Stoll explains. \u201cThe German chemist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/August-Kekule-von-Stradonitz\">August Kekule von Stradonitz<\/a> discovered the benzene [ring] after he had a vision of the ouroborus in a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwn.cdc.gov\/TSP\/ToxFAQs\/ToxFAQsDetails.aspx?faqid=38&amp;toxid=14\">Benzene<\/a>, a byproduct of combustion found in cigarette smoke and car exhaust, causes smog, contaminates water, and has been linked to bone marrow cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-element-78f53273\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1081\" height=\"811\" class=\"gb-media-81c1fd1a\" src=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dragons_ouroborus-1080x810-1.webp\" alt=\"Ouroborus, depicts a dragon\/snake eating its own tail: a symbol for rebirth.\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dragons_ouroborus-1080x810-1.webp 1081w, https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dragons_ouroborus-1080x810-1-600x450.webp 600w, https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dragons_ouroborus-1080x810-1-768x576.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1081px) 100vw, 1081px\" \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"295\" height=\"397\" class=\"gb-media-ceabc520\" alt=\"\" title=\"dragon-number-5\" src=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/dragon-number-5.webp\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-text gb-text-e0957e33\"><span class=\"commons-sr-only\">5. <\/span>Real Dragons at Risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dragons don\u2019t just exist in folklore across the world, but in very real ecosystems. You\u2019ve probably encountered at least one of the 3,000-plus species of <em>dragon<\/em>flies, or perhaps you\u2019ve stopped to smell the snap<em>dragons<\/em>. And depending on where you live, you might have come face to face with any number of reptilian dragons, like the enormous Komodo dragon to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwalumni.com\/news\/teachers-pets-steph-tai-and-megyn-kelly\/\">cuddly pet bearded dragon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But many of the world\u2019s real dragons are at risk of becoming just legends due to our rapidly changing climate, habitat loss, and pollution. More than 100 \u201cdragons\u201d are classified as endangered or critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature\u2019s Red List.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among them are the dragon snail, found only in hydrothermal vents in the Indian Ocean; the Dragoncillo del Cabo de Gata, a snapdragon flower found on just a 12-square-mile area in Spain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juntadeandalucia.es\/medioambiente\/portal\/landing-page-%C3%ADndice\/-\/asset_publisher\/zX2ouZa4r1Rf\/content\/cabo-de-gata-n-c3-adjar-geopark\/20151?categoryVal=\">Cabo de Gata-N\u00edjar Geopark<\/a>; and the pocket-sized Victorian grassland earless dragon which was thought to be extinct until <a href=\"https:\/\/a-z-animals.com\/articles\/lost-for-50-years-this-tiny-dragon-now-needs-500-to-be-safe\/#h-victorian-grassland-earless-dragons-were-once-thought-extinct\">it was rediscovered
