From what I\u2019ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not often that I get to quote Robert Frost, but it feels appropriate as we close our editorial journey through the elements with fire. Though fire is indeed a normal and natural part of ecological function \u2014 and any adaptive system follows cycles of reorganization, growth, and release \u2014 the incidence of wildlife in the U.S. and Canada has become truly alarming and often devastating. Whether or not we\u2019ve entered a \u201cPyrocene,\u201d dealing with fire is core to environmental studies and sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-element-56227fd0\">\n<figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/Paul-Robbins-Office.webp\" alt=\"Dean Paul Robbins\" class=\"wp-image-50282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/Paul-Robbins-Office.webp 800w, https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/Paul-Robbins-Office-600x600.webp 600w, https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/Paul-Robbins-Office-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/wp-content\/uploads\/Paul-Robbins-Office-768x768.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figcaption class=\"gb-text\">Paul Robbins<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like fire itself, the ground this issue covers is indiscriminate. We talk about fire\u2019s ability to destroy and to heal, to inspire and to despair. Take <a href=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/the-land-ethic-in-a-world-on-fire-aldo-leopold\/\">our cover story<\/a>, for example, written by Dylan Couch \u2014 a graduate associate in our Center for Culture, History, and Environment. Through the scorched items found in Aldo Leopold\u2019s pocket on the day he died \u2014 which are housed in our very own University Archives \u2014 he explores the precarity of protecting our collective history in an age dominated by fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also share tips for <a href=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/how-to-not-start-a-fire\/\">how <em>not <\/em>to start a fire<\/a>, as well as a look at how our students learn to do the opposite in <a href=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/field-notes-prescribed-burn-class\/\">our prescribed burn class<\/a>. For a more metaphorical approach to fire, new faculty affiliate Katherine Cornwall discusses <a href=\"https:\/\/nelson.wisc.edu\/the-commons\/learning-without-burning-out-emotionally-informed-environmental-education\/\">preventing burnout<\/a> from her research at the intersection of mental health and climate change.
