Dr. Anna M. Gade named new Associate Dean for Education and Research

Effective January 3, 2020, the new Associate Dean for Education and Research at the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies will be Dr. Anna M. Gade.

Dr. Gade is a Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor in the Nelson Institute, with affiliations in Southeast Asian Studies and Religious Studies. Her research since 2007 explains global cultural, historical and religious responses to environmental change, specializing in history, knowledge and practices of the Muslim world and Southeast Asia. She teaches academic courses in environmental humanities and comparative environmental ethics as well as Islam, the study of global religion, and Asian Studies. Her new book, Muslim Environmentalisms: Religious and Social Dimensions, was published by Columbia University Press in August, 2019.

Having served as the Chair of the Institute’s committees for Equity and Diversity and the Undergraduate Program, Professor Gade is pleased to take on this new role supporting academic and professional programs, administrative affairs, and strategic decision-making in regard to the Institute’s research centers. She looks forward to enhancing partnerships across campus in the areas of sustainability, outreach, and environmental study and practice.
