Wisconsin Natural Resources Student Assistant (Wildlife, Native Plants, & Pollinators)

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Assistant (Wildlife, Native Plants, & Pollinators) will support staff at the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (Medford-Park Falls District) with wildlife management and pollinator habitat programs This position is based on-site, in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Local housing in the Medford, WI area will be provided by the US Forest Service.

The Student Assistant will:

  • Participate in and contribute to a variety of field-based wildlife ecology, research, and management programs.
  • Assist with pollinator and phenology surveys.
  • Use botanical keys to assist with the identification of plants encountered during field trips or surveys of forest areas.
  • Compile and summarize vegetation types obtained from aerial and ground surveys.
  • Use computer systems and associated software for recording, organizing, storing, and analyzing data.
  • Assist with ecological restoration including tending gardens to enhance pollinator habitat, collecting and cleaning seeds, weeding, & irrigation.
  • Uses global positioning systems, aerial photographs, topographic maps, GIS and/or compass in navigation.
  • Perform highly physical labor and daily hiking, sometimes to remote locations in rugged terrain under possible adverse weather conditions.
  • A portion of time may be dedicated to data entry, producing maps, and other duties in a laboratory/office setting.
  • Participate in professional development workshops to gain leadership skills.
  • Learn about diverse career paths for natural resource professionals.
