Conservation Intern

Summary: This student hourly position supports daily operations and conservation efforts at the UW-Madison Division of Extension Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center. This position will assist the Facility and Operations Manager with preparation for educational programming materials, preparing for and leading conservation projects, administration of Upham Woods community programs, and grounds & facility maintenance tasks. Grounds & facility maintenance tasks may include minor building repairs, mowing operations, trail work, or more. This position may explore additional areas of interest related to environmental education programming or conservation related field work.

Job Duties

The position will work closely with the Facility and Operations Manager to administer the Paddle Pass program during the summer months. Additionally, this position will support conservation projects by preparing necessary tools, safety equipment, and project materials for use on conservation project days. Students will also explore areas of environmental education programming as it relates to youth education and the Upham Woods Outpost Program.

  • Evaluate and maintain existing Outpost Program camping equipment including tents, cooking equipment, canoes, paddles, personal floatation devices and more.
  • Record and issue Paddle Passes per program guidelines.
  • Maintain trail tools including mcleods, shovels, saws, pickaxes, loppers, and rakes.
  • Under supervision of the Facility and Operations Manager, perform trail work related tasks such as trail repair, new trail construction, and trail reroutes.
  • Perform invasive vegetative species removal.
  • Complete facility maintenance projects including painting, minor cleaning, as needed
