The Nelson Institute is home to four interdisciplinary research centers that serve as laboratories and incubators for solutions to the world’s most critical environmental challenges.

The Nelson Institute Outreach Specialist position delivers and assists with planning outreach program activities, strengthens partnerships, ensures adherence to policy, and assists with program administration to promote stable and productive relationships between the university and local community. In addition, the successful applicant will strive to expand and ensure access to programs, facilities, and educational services to diverse audiences. This position may assist with tracking and managing the outreach program budget.

Principal duties

  • 15% Identifies, promotes, and maintains external partnerships to support the outreach program
  • 25% Schedules and secures resources and communicates logistics in support of an outreach program
  • 25% Delivers outreach program content and materials to community members
  • 10% Researches, develops, and facilitates outreach program content and materials
  • 10% Develops and evaluates curriculum and programs and provides recommendations for improvement
  • 5% May assist with the monitoring of outreach program budget spending
  • 5% Leads the implementation of programs, policies, and procedures through oversight of day-to- day activities for program staff and student and community volunteers
  • 5% General administrative support

The tasks associated with job responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Identify partners for promotion of programs/events
  • Communicate by email, phone or video with partners, speakers, and attendees for the program/event
  • Secure catering/facilities/technology for programs/events
  • Create and manage registration for programs/events
  • Process travel and reimbursement for speakers for programs/events
  • Manage on-site event/program execution (i.e. interfacing the day of the event with speakers, facility, catering, attendees, technology)
  • Coordinate event materials (Nelson event booths, any print outs/agendas or other materials needed)
  • Evaluate promotional materials needs for and coordinate ordering of new materials
  • Create content for Advancement Communications
  • Create program/event evaluations and make recommendations for improvements for program/event delivery
  • Communicate with Nelson Institute Business Manager to track expenses for programs/events
  • Input data into the Alumni Database (ABE)
  • Process mailings (printing labels, stuffing envelopes)
  • Take notes during committee or board meetings
