Some funding sources defy classification but are equally valuable. Here are some additional resources, compiled by various groups, both internal and external to campus:
Graduate School Resources
This office also sponsors the Graduate School Seminar and Workshop Series, offered each semester. These sessions are open to all members of the campus community. Topics typically include such areas as proposal writing, preparing proposal budgets, grant databases, and the on-campus grant process.
In addition, the Graduate School supports the Graduate Student Collaborative. GSC distributes a weekly newsletter for graduate students, available through its listserv, which includes announcements of graduate funding opportunities. GradLink is a supplement to this newsletter, and includes funding opportunities. GSC also administers the annual Vilas Fellowship competition.
Grants Information Collection
Another indispensable campus resource is the Grants Information Collection (GIC), in Room 262 of Memorial Library. GIC maintains a large collection of reference materials on fellowships and grants, some of which are specific to graduate study. Both CD-ROM resources and printed materials are available at the library, and funding workshops are offered each semester. In particular, see the funding workshop schedule and the funding sources for individuals. Equally valuable is their list of proposal-writing web sites.
The university subscribes to several online funding databases, and access is available to all current students, faculty, and staff. Because the system must be able to recognize a user as a UW-Madison subscriber, you may find that you need to access these through a university-based computer (SPIN requires cookies; the others do not):
For links to other funding databases such as GrantsNet, see the list of funding resources posted by UW's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
Beyond UW-Madison, it can be valuable to explore other university funding resources. For example, Michigan State University's guide to Grants and Related Resources includes a useful section on Grants for Individuals.
