SUMMARY:Weston Roundtable - Turning the Tide on Plastic Pollution and Other
Ocean Threats: A Science-Based Campaign Approach
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kim Warner\, Senior Scientist\, Oceana\n\nHow do we pr
otect and restore our oceans? This talk will explore the campaign approach
Oceana\, an ocean conservation organization\, uses to achieve science-bas
ed policy victories.\n\nWarner will touch briefly on her work and what it
took to achieve favorable policy outcomes in both the mercury-contaminated
and mislabeled seafood campaigns but focus more on her current work on pl
astic pollution\, including the full lifecycle of plastic and its harmful
effects. Warner will also touch on the distinctions of doing science for a
dvocacy and what training helped prepare her.\n\nThe Weston Roundtable is
made possible by a generous donation from Roy F. Weston\, a highly accompl
ished UW-Madison alumnus. Designed to promote a robust understanding of su
stainability science\, engineering\, and policy\, these interactive lectur
es are co-sponsored by the Center for Sustainability and the Global Envir
onment (SAGE)\, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, a
 nd the Office of Sustainability.
