CPEP Seminar – A Nonlinear Dynamics Approach to Understanding and Measuring Sustainability

Speaker: Dylan McNamara, Professor and Chair, Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography, University of North Carolina-Wilmington

The term “sustainability” has become ubiquitous in everyday experience. It is found everywhere from the grocery store to the car dealership. Despite having the characteristics of a buzzword, sustainability is none the less an extremely important concept as we face global-scale climate challenges resulting from our current, unsustainable relationship with nature. This talk will provide a foundation for understanding and measuring sustainability using tools from nonlinear dynamics. McNamara will also show recent work using such tools to measure variations in sustainability in communities subject to natural disasters.

Hosted by the Climate, People and the Environment Program (CPEP).
