India’s booming industry relies heavily on coal, therefore the country must mine to support their economy. Roughly ninety-one percent of all the coal mined in India’s West Bengal and Bihar states is directed towards powering industry. This extraction does not come without environmental costs. Rivers suffer from run-off of minerals released in the mining process. Too many of these substances act as pollutants to the rivers, which has negative effects on the surrounding areas and people. In the West Bengal state, the Damodar river is the most severely affected.
