This image shows the firing between police and anti-mining villagers in West Bengal India. The villagers had seized machinery from a coal mining company. The machinery seized was called “an earth-mover”. This earth-mover is property of the company DVC Emta, and the anti-mining villagers claim that the company had stolen their land for coal mining with little compensation given. Police soon after intervened by allegedly firing at the villagers, injuring 6 villagers. It was also reported that the villagers fought back by attacking the police with bows and arrows, injuring 27 cops. This image and story shows the controversy that can arise due to mining especially compensation for land for mining use.
