From the first graph, it can be seen that Kolkata ranks as number one in India in producing the most solid waste. The staggering 12,060 tons of waste generated in Kolkata every day can be averaged out to .51 kg per person per day. As the population grows, the amount of waste increases, as well. This pattern is illustrated in the second graph. The last charts break down where the waste is coming from and how much of it is being recycled. Commercial areas are the largest contributor, followed closely by households. Although a hefty amount of this waste has the potential to be recycled, a majority of recyclable material never makes it way back into the recycling process.
