This photo shows Kolkata residents drawing water from a well, despite the new threat of arsenic contamination of the city’s groundwater. In West Bengal, a majority of the districts have been tested positive for this toxic substance. Unfortunately, this trend is moving towards Kolkata, as well. While only one-sixth of the city depends upon groundwater, arsenic contamination could still wreak havoc on these areas as it causes various health problems. To avoid these types of issues, developers must test the ground water before constructing complexes. In attempt to diminish the arsenic threat, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation planned to set up a water treatment plant. However, this project was put on hold due to environmental regulations aiming to preserve wetlands on the proposed construction site.
