Biography: Jesse Gant is a PhD candidate and project assistant in the UW--Madison history department. He is interested in the nineteenth century United States, and will be writing his dissertation on the formation and development of the Republican Party during the Civil War Era. He has written on the politics of Underground Railroad commemoration, John Brown's farming community in upstate New York, antebellum college literary societies, and will be publishing "Wheel Fever: How Wisconsin Became a Great Bicycling State," with the Wisconsin Historical Society Press in 2013.
