Biography: I received my B.A. in Geology and Geophysics from Yale in 1976, then spent four years in geotechnical consulting, including 2 years in Mali, West Africa where I participated in a groundwater resources inventory for the country. I entered the graduate program in Applied Earth Sciences at Stanford in 1980 and worked part time for the USGS while completing my Ph.D. I joined the UW Madison faculty in 1987. I chaired the WRM program from 1996-1999 and chaired the Department of Geology and Geophysics (now Geoscience) from 2005-2008. I served as President of the Geological Society of America in 2009-2010.
