Biography: Undergraduate training in English at Stanford University; graduate training in English at the University of Chicago, on the UW-Madison faculty since 1981. After many years of studying American poetry written since the mid-20th century, I have recently turned to environmental studies and particularly environmental approaches to poetry. As a genre, poetry has long been associated with "nature writing"; recent poets, thinking in terms of "ecopoetics," address broader understandings of environmental writing, often focusing on urban environments and environmental justice issues.
