Nelson Institute visiting professor, Eduardo Santana Castellón, has been elected to the Governing Board of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. The lab, which was founded in 1915, was the first institution created in the Western Hemisphere for the study of birds. The Laboratory has conducted pioneering work in the re-introduction of captive bred birds in to the wild, implemented censuses with radar and acoustic technology, compiled the largest digital collection of bird songs in the world, and promoted citizen science through online electronic platforms such as e-bird. Dr. Santana follows in the footsteps of his UW-Madison undergraduate advisors, Joseph Hickey and Stanley Temple, who over the past 50 years have also been elected to this board on different occasions. Dr. Santana´s credentials for this appointment include having been part of the National Coordinating Committee (Mexico) of the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI), co-authoring the first tri-national (Canada-United States -Mexico) continental assessment on the status of land- birds, initiating the federal training program for monitoring birds in Mexico´s natural protected areas, and coordinating the analysis on the diversity and conservation of the birds in the state of Jalisco. Dr. Santana is also a UW-Madison alumnus (DFWE BSc 74, MSc 85, PhD 00) and a professor at the University of Guadalajara, México.
