Sustainability Fellow, St Johns University

The Office of Sustainability at St. John's University invites applications for the position of Sustainability Fellow. This position holds the responsibility of advising the Sustainability Campus Committee on sustainable campus operations, including energy, transportation, waste and recycling, water, transportation, food, purchasing, and all other aspects of campus operations. Coordinating with the senior fellow, the fellow will support the work of the committee through data collection and analysis; project development and implementation; campus education, outreach, and marketing; and by coordinating communication among the many units responsible for discrete elements of our sustainability plans.


This position exists to provide a job-based learning opportunity for a recent graduate interested in a career in campus or corporate sustainability. The position provides for advanced development of sustainability knowledge, development and application of analytical and organizational skills related to sustainability, and hands-on experience working with multiple stakeholders in a complex operating environment. This is a full-time (40 hr./week) position limited to 24 months from the date of initial appointment beginning early summer 2012.


EDUCATION: Bachelor of Arts or Sciences required, preferably in environmental studies, natural science, economics, engineering, or related field. Familiarity with greenhouse gas audits and/or campus sustainability issues is desirable.


EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Basic understanding of environmental science issues related to climate change, energy, and technical aspects of campus operations. Grant writing experience desirable. Enthusiasm for sustainability and willingness to share sustainability knowledge with diverse campus constituencies. Strong oral and written communication skills required. A desire to increase skills and knowledge of campus sustainability through on-the-job training, individual study, classes, workshops, and other means. Must have the ability to work independently and to manage multiple projects simultaneously without daily supervision. Functional computer knowledge and ability/willingness to remain current with word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
